The house always wins

Almost always. The Golden Ace runs slots around the clock in every city, and the Sundale Speedway takes a bet on every race. Here's how they work, and why they're for fun rather than income.

Virtual currency onlyEvery game of chance in Vice Nation uses in-game money. You can't buy it with real money and you can't cash it out. Nothing you win or lose has real-world value.

TL;DR

  • Every slot setting and every Speedway bet returns 95% over time. You lose about 5 cents of every dollar you bet.
  • Bet size and line count change how swingy a game feels, never what it returns.
  • The free daily wheel is the only positive bet in the building. Always take it.
  • Big wins are announced in the feed. Walk straight to the bank.
  • Property, wages and activities build wealth. The casino is how you have fun with some of it.

The slot machines

Every Golden Ace has three machines. Pick a coin size (5¢, 10¢, 25¢ or $1), how many lines and how many coins per line. Bets and wins come from cash on hand.

MachineReelsLinesCoins/lineMax bet
Neon Sevens3 reels: sevens, bars, bells, cherries, wilds that double1–51–3$15
Diamond Heist5 reels: diamonds, money bags, crowns, martinis1–101–2$20
Dragon's Pearl5 reels: dragons, tigers, red envelopes, lanterns1–91–5$45

Fair by design

  • Every spin is decided on the server with a secure random number generator. The machine on your screen only animates the result.
  • Every game and line setting is calibrated to return 95% of wagers, and verified by simulation.
  • More lines means more frequent, smaller wins: roughly one spin in five hits at one line, one in three at max lines.
  • Hit 50× your bet on a single spin for the High Roller achievement.
Worked example: an evening on Dragon's Pearl
200 spins at $9 (9 lines, 1 coin, $1)
$1,800 wagered
Expected back at 95%
$1,710
Expected cost of the fun
−$90

Any single night can land far above or below that. Over many nights, it lands right there.

The daily free wheel

Once a day, a free spin at any Golden Ace. Prizes scale with your level:

The cash segments average about $17 per level a spin, plus the supplies.

Sundale Speedway

Only in Sundale, which opens at level 3. Six stock cars race every time you bet: Desert Fox, Lucky Strike, Sidewinder, Mirage, Dust Devil and Cactus Jack. Every car has the same 1-in-6 chance. Bet $10 to $50,000; pick the winner and the track pays 5.7× your stake.

Worked example: six $1,000 races

$6,000
One win on average, at 5.7×
$5,700
The track keeps
$300 (5%)

"Due" cars don't exist. Every race is a fresh roll.

Bank your winningsSpeedway wins of $1,000+ and big slot hits are announced in the feed. Every mugger in town reads it. Walk straight to the bank.

Strategy, such as it is

  • Set a budget before you sit down, and stop when it's gone.
  • Bet from a fresh pocket. Withdraw what you'll play, bank the rest, so a hot streak isn't sitting above your safe.
  • Chase the leaderboard, not the money. Casino winnings have their own board for bragging rights.
  • Play after the routine, not instead of it. The wheel, contracts and activities pay; the slots charge.

Common mistakes

  • Doubling up to win it back. A 95% return doesn't care what happened last spin.
  • Betting your rent money. $5,000 at the Speedway is a Laundromat that pays back in 15 days.
  • Walking around with a jackpot. The feed announced it. The bank is two blocks away.

Play responsibly

Vice Nation's casino is a game inside a game. It never involves real money, but chance-based games can still pull you in. If you're playing longer than you meant to, take a break: the city will still be there.

If gambling with real money is affecting you or someone you know, free and confidential help is available. In the United States, call or text 1-800-GAMBLER. Elsewhere, look for a local gambling support service.
